Comunity and Service

Student Council/Interact Club - Rotary International
Towards the end of MYP 4 I applied to become student leader. A student leader is similar to Head boy/Head girl in other schools. They are expected at school events, often given leading roles in school activities, are given the responsibility of running the school council (which consists of representatives from each MYP class) and meeting up regularly to discuss various topics, issues and upcoming social events - many of which we must plan. The student leaders and decided by both the teachers and voted upon by the student body. This year there were two student leaders, me included.

Swim Job
A year ago I decided to look up a job as a swim coach through my local swim club. I have been a competitive swimmer in the club so experience was not a problem. I sent in an application in and received a job as an assistance swim coach for 4-6 year old children, on Mondays for 3 hours. This is 4 courses, each 45 minutes.

The job is extremely enjoyable and eye opening. There are so many positive children and its so much fun to see them accomplish something from your teaching and help.

However there are also many challenges and difficulties. There are some children who are more difficult than others. They may not want to do the tasks given or do as they are told and in these cases I need to be principled with them.

This opportunity has given me so much knowledge and experience and I will continue to learn from it. The job is very professional with legal documents, signatures etc. and I am expected to act professional.

Bonfire Night

Bonfire night/Guy Fawkes night is an annual celebration rejoicing the failure of Guido Fawkes (Guy Fawkes) when he lead a rebellious group trying to overthrow the king, by blowing up the houses of parliament using gun powder, in 1605. Today the rebellious group would be considered a terrorist group. The actual event is celebrated on the 5th of November, however this was on a school night so the school decided to celebrate it on the following Saturday (7th November). There are several traditions of this event, mostly in the UK. The night is celebrated with food, a bonfire and fireworks.

As BISS was organizing the event, I decided to show up early and therefor I could add in some community and service. I did two small jobs during the event. I first went to the entrance and back to communicate how many more people were needed at the entrance to ensure safety with several cars coming in etc. I also spent about 30-45 minutes standing at the forest path collecting tickets/money for people to enter if they were attending to the event. Not many people went that route, although the money was valuable. The money collected from the event goes to fund school trips for the students.

The weather wasn’t ideal but became better throughout the night. By the time the fireworks came, the rain had stopped. The night was shorter than previous years but was still a great success.

Eco Club
The Eco club used to be an afterschool club for KS2 students. It was organized by the school, for the students to work together by trying to make our school eco friendly through recycling, gardening and donating money to charities. At that time the school had the green eco flag showing our school was an eco-friendly one. This was achieved through accomplishing a series of tasks and events to improve the environment both locally and possibly spreading to influence other schools. However the school has lost the green flag due to not keeping up with the recycling etc.

Recently, Anne-Lise Rhodes has started up the eco-club again. It first started as a small group with a couple of people, but has grown to the entire MYP 4 class who meet every Wednesday in order to work on files, recycling, fundraiser in order to take action.

The club has done several fundraisers such as bake sales and non-uniform days. We also made 5000 nok from Statoil in order to count cars/traffic near a roundabout, as they needed to know this in order to further construct. The club has donated the money to organizations such as WWF, sea shepherds, and various charities working to save rainforests and benefit the environment. In addition the club bought new recycling bins for the school. They were previously one bin in each classroom for all waste. The new bins have three compartments for plastic, paper, and food waste. This is no far easier to recycle every week. The eco club got them into each classroom with bin bags along with a list of people in the classroom for each week who need to empty the bins. This is a rota and is needed for the flag, as it requires the entire school to work together.

Smaller additional CAS participation

Learning CPR in Science
In Science my class were going to learn CPR. CPR stands for; Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. CPR is a way to bring people back to life from being unconscious to conscious. Any person can learn CPR and any person can save a life. My class and i learned how to save someone’s life using CPR about a month ago in Science.

Every student had to teach his or her parents CPR. We took photos; we practiced CPR at home and enjoyed teaching our family members. We practiced a lot in class and followed a video that came with the package. It was a thirty-minute video and if needed (wanted) you could take the video home and watch it alone or with your family. I really enjoyed and i think the rest of the class did as well.

The mannequin we used was called Anne, and was formed from a real person; a French girl who drowned in a river. The mannequin was made to respond to breast compressions and mouth-to-mouth. We trained on it several times together as a class, and it was very successful.

Red Nose Day
Our school celebrated something called Comic relief day, also celebrating Red Nose Day, where we dressed up in funny costumes and wore red noses. We paid 10 nok to dress up and all the money went to charity. Some people played football matches, including me. I was in the crimson team, i played 3 matches and won in 2 of them, and in the other we had a draw with the other team. Everyone also got to play a volleyball match, but for my volleyball match we unfortunately lost, and didn't go on to the next round or the finals. Close to the end of the day the whole MYP department did the Harlem shake, where one of our teachers started the dance and afterwards everyone joined in, it was great fun and i really enjoyed it.

Terry fox run

The Terry Fox Run is a fund run to raise money for cancer research. Each student tries to get as many sponsors as possible and for every lap around the field the sponsor will give you money, which you then further give to charity. We raised a lot of money in 2013. And the run for 2014 is this Friday on the 6th June. In 2013 I did 21 laps, with my friend Auriane. It was extremely fun and enjoyable. The whole school raised a lot of money! This year i am aiming to get 30 laps. Hopefully I can!
